On the vast majority of Audi, VW, Škoda and SEAT engines, a snapped cambelt doesn’t just leave you stranded. It lets the pistons and valves collide inside the engine. On these ‘interference’ engine designs, that means bent valves, cracked pistons, and very often a destroyed cylinder head. In the worst cases, the engine isn’t worth repairing — and a full replacement is the only option.
IMPORTANT: change your cambelt at the manufacturer’s recommended mileage interval or five years, whichever comes first. There’s usually no warning before a belt fails — no noise, no warning light, no gradual decline. The interval exists precisely because visual condition is not a reliable indicator.
Because this work is so critical, you’ll only want to entrust it to skilled, manufacturer-trained VAG technicians. As well as knowing your Audi TDI or VW Bluemotion as well as any main dealership, our North West London team can save you significantly on labour.
From VW Polo cambelts to Audi R8 timing chains
Whether you drive an older Polo (cambelt) or the latest Audi R8 (timing chain), correct cambelt or timing chain work is essential. As one of West London’s top cambelt change specialists:
With cambelts, timing chains or any valvetrain work, labour is a big part of the bill. Our rates are up to 50% less than at main dealers.
Cambelt changes are complex enough on small engines, but much more involved on big six- and eight-cylinder powerplants — such as the 4.2-litre V8 on some Audi A8 models, or the ultra-sophisticated two-stage chain drives on Audi V10 engines.
Entrusting us with cambelt or timing chain work doesn’t mean losing main dealer benefits. We’re fully licensed for the same access to the worldwide VW Audi Offboard Diagnostic Information System (ODIS) and the Audi Digital Service Schedule.
A proper cambelt service includes tensioners, idlers and the water pump where the manufacturer specifies — replaced together, so you’re not paying for the same labour twice in a few years. We always follow the full manufacturer schedule rather than replacing parts in isolation.
Customers bring Audis and Volkswagens to us from across England for cambelt changes and timing chain repairs. From cold-start rattles on VAG 1.2 TSI petrol engines to high-performance Audi RS6 cambelt changes or W12 valvetrains — there isn’t much we haven’t seen.
‘These guys are amazing and extremely knowledgeable. They replaced my timing chains, dual-mass flywheel and clutch with no problem! A major job which they made easy! I will definitely be returning for my annual service.’ — Andre Bourne (via Google Reviews)
Q: How do I know if my cambelt is due?
A: Send us your registration and mileage and we’ll check the manufacturer’s exact interval for your model, free of charge. Intervals vary considerably across the VAG range, and if you bought the car used, the previous owner’s records may not be reliable.
Q: What happens if a cambelt fails while driving?
A: On most VAG engines, this causes serious internal engine damage — bent valves, damaged pistons, sometimes a destroyed cylinder head. In severe cases the engine can’t reasonably be repaired at all and a full engine replacement becomes the only option. There’s usually no warning before it happens.
Q: My cambelt looks fine — can I leave it a bit longer?
A: Visual inspection tells you very little. Cambelts typically fail from internal wear and fatigue that isn’t visible from the outside. The manufacturer interval exists because visual condition isn’t a reliable indicator — on an interference engine, getting that judgement wrong can mean the difference between routine maintenance and losing the engine entirely.
Q: Do you replace the water pump at the same time?
A: Where the manufacturer specifies a combined cambelt and water pump interval, yes — we always follow the full manufacturer schedule rather than replacing parts in isolation.
From a classic Volkswagen Beetle cabriolet to the latest Audi RS range — discerning owners bring VW and Audi cars here because they know we follow manufacturers’ workshop procedures exactly and always use genuine parts.
That’s why we always change water pumps, cambelt tensioners, rollers, coolant and fan belts at the same time as cambelts where specified. It costs more — but not as much as a new engine. We often fix previously unresolved issues for a fraction of what customers have already spent elsewhere, and we’re never surprised when those customers become regulars and family friends.
We’re proud to be part of our local community: a friendly family business in Harrow, Middlesex.

Unlike dealerships that ‘can’t do a cambelt change for weeks’, our lead-time is usually under three days. We’ll always do whatever we can to accommodate emergency requests — perhaps you just bought a car, discovered it’s overdue, and you’re about to go on a long trip. Call us.
Cambelt changes on complex six- or eight-cylinder engines can take up to nine hours. Because our labour rates are up to 50% less than at main dealers, this makes a substantial difference. Our two-year parts and labour guarantee is standard — though our right-first-time record means you’re unlikely to need it.
